Calculating your Grade Point Average(GPA)

Students are assessed throughout each course using the following methods:

  • assignments
  • tutorials and laboratory sessions
  • semester examinations and
  • final examinations.

Performance in each course is expressed in terms of a letter grade with an associated grade point and overall program performance is expressed as a Grade Point Average (GPA).

How GPA is Calculated

The GPA is determined by averaging the grade point multiplied by the Units of Credit (UOC) for each course. For example, if a student gained the following final grades:

Academic English    B-
Computing Studies    A
Mathematics S    B
Chemistry    C
Biology     C+

then the GPA would be as follows:

Course UOC Grade GPA Calculation
Academic English 10 B- 10 x 7.5 = 75
Computing Studies 6 A- 6 x 9.0 = 54
Mathematics S 12 B 12 x 8.0 = 96
Chemistry
10 C 10 x 6.5 = 65
Biology 10 C+ 10 x 7.0 = 70
Total 48 360
GPA = Total points earned divided by (÷) the total units of credit = 360 ÷ 48
= 7.5
